It’s Almost Like We Have a Kitchen

It’s a funny thing – sometimes it’s hard to find the time to write about something when you’re busy actually doing it. This has been a crazy week; we worked at the house on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, plus all day Saturday and Sunday. Usually, we’ve been working all day Saturday and then part of the day – for stuff like clean up, store runs, and so on – on Sunday, but we try not to work too much during the week so we can get our own work done. I hate to say this, but I think we might be getting old. After our long day at the house on Saturday, we’ve been waking up every Sunday barely able to move. We had been doing some pretty labor intensive work; taking up flooring, tearing down walls, so it felt pretty justified. This weekend though, all I did was assemble cabinets, and Sunday morning my back and knees hurt from kneeling and my hands were swollen from holding the screwdriver all day.

We’re getting into the home stretch and while the house is changing fast, there’s SO MUCH still to do. We had those 138 boxes to unpack and assemble all the cabinets. Cindy and Wayne and Terri all came over to help on different evenings, and by Thursday we had all the cabinets assembled and ready for install.

Saturday we spent the day installing (mostly Kyle and Wayne) and building all the drawers (mostly Cindy and I). By the end of the day, we had the whole kitchen space laid out! We still need to wire the oven and install the sink, and a bunch of other things (ok a LOT of other things), but you can really see it taking shape now. You can see the finished drywall in these photos too. Looks pretty different, doesn’t it?

The flooring goes in this week, which was the purpose of the big rush to get the kitchen in place. The installer will floor up to the legs, and then a toekick goes over the front to finish it off. Getting the flooring was a whole other saga, involving a walrus, a long journey, and an evil villain – that’ll be the next post.

Look, you can see where all the stools will go, where friends will be able to sit at the bar while we’re in the kitchen, or help out on the extended peninsula! I’m so, so excited for it to be completed. Not long now!
